Math mystery pictures are an engaging activity that combines skill practice with fun – and your 5th and 6th graders will actually ask for more. If you’re looking for a way to keep learning rigorous while celebrating holidays, these activities might be exactly what you need.
I started creating math mystery picture activities when I was teaching 5th grade and needed something engaging that didn’t require hours of prep. These became such a hit that by spring, students were requesting past holiday sheets for extra practice before testing. While upper elementary students may play it cool, they’re still kids who want to celebrate fun holidays at school.
The key to making math mystery pictures work? Managing how students complete them. Here are three strategies I’ve used successfully to maximize skill practice while keeping students engaged.
1. Separate the Problem Sheet from the Coloring
If you have students who are only interested in coloring, it can become a distraction from the skill practice. Give your students the problem sheet first. Once they finish solving all of the problems, they can get the coloring sheet to find the mystery picture.
This is a great way for them to self-check their work as well – if they can’t find their answer on the coloring sheet, they’ll need to rework the problem. This works especially well during independent work time or as an early finisher activity.
2. Use Digital Mystery Pictures for Instant Feedback
No time for coloring? If your students have access to technology, have them put their answers into the digital activity after solving the worksheet problems. The mystery image appears as students fill in the correct answers on the Google Sheet activity. If they input an incorrect answer, they get instant feedback and will need to try again.

3. Save Them for Holiday Celebrations
There’s always pressure to keep pushing forward with the curriculum in upper elementary because of testing. Math mystery pictures are a great way to give students an educational activity on days you celebrate holidays in the classroom.
Your administrator will love that students are learning while celebrating, and you’ll avoid the guilt of “wasting” instructional time.
